Disappointed by Today’s proclamation – Sunder Pichai on Donald Trump’s move to suspend H- 1B and other visas

Following the presidential proclamation on Tuesday, 23rd June 2020, by Donald Trump on the suspension of H- 1B and other visas, Google CEO Sunder Pichai has expressed disappointment. He said in a tweet, “Immigration has contributed immensely to America's economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today.” He added, “Disappointed by today's proclamation - we'll continue to stand with immigrants and work to expand opportunity for all.”

In a separate statement, the president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Vanita Gupta also slammed the latest move of the Trump Administration. She stated, “The latest travel ban is a new season of the same racist, xenophobic show put on by Donald Trump and Stephen Miller.” While further adding, “But Trump's transparent effort to rally his base and distract from his innumerable failures, including his disastrous response to COVID-19, will not work. Indeed, the courts will stop his unlawful actions targeting immigrants. Like the past versions of this overused script using a pandemic to justify white nationalist policies, it deserves to be canceled.”

Alice G Wells, who was formerly the point person of the Trump Administration for South and Central Asia, also opposed the move. She stated, “Being able to attract the best and the brightest through the H1-B visa program has made America more successful and resilient. Knowing how to tap foreign talent is a US strength, not a weakness!”

President Donald Trump signed an order on Monday, 22nd June 2020, to temporarily suspend access to a number of employment-based visas, affecting hundreds of thousands of people seeking work in the U.S. The technology industry said that the move would affect the economy.

Pichai started his career as a material engineer and joined Google as a management executive in 2004. In addition, he became CEO of Alphabet Inc. in December 2019. On 11 December 2018, Pichai testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on a wide range of issues related to Google, such as the alleged potential political bias on Google Platforms, the company's alleged plans for a "censored search app" in China, and its privacy practices. In response, Pichai stated that Google employees can not influence the results of the search. He also claimed that Google users could opt-out of having their data collected and that "there are no current plans for a censored search engine" in China.
