In a case relevant to the "conspiracy" behind the February group violence in the northeast part of the city, the Delhi police filed a charge sheet before a court against former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and student Sharjeel Imam on Sunday ( October 22, 2020).
Under the appropriate sections of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the police filed the charge sheet before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat against Khalid and Imam. They were also accused of rioting, unlawful assembly, criminal conspiracy, assassination, the promotion of religious enmity, language, caste, etc., and other parts of the
Indian Penal Code, 1860. The crimes involve a maximum sentence of death.
On February 24, 2020, after violence between those who backed changes to the Citizenship Law and those who opposed them, communal clashes broke out in North East Delhi. The violence killed at least 53 people and injured about 200.
