A resident of Chennai New Washermenpet, Jhansi Rani filed a complaint against a hospital in Tondiarpet, Chennai where she underwent a sterilization surgery in 2001. In her complaint, she mentioned that after her surgery she led a normal life but sometimes felt abdominal pain and vomiting. She continued this way until 2017 when one day she fainted due to her unbearable pain.
She was admitted to Government Stanley Hospital where the doctors informed that her life was in danger and they need to operate on her immediately. After the surgery, they said that the failure of the sterilization surgery that she underwent could be the reason for her ectopic pregnancy which caused danger to her life. She therefore in March 2020 approached the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai, and asked for compensation for endangering her life due to the negligence and carelessness of the doctors.
The forum imposed a penalty on the hospital and asked them to pay her Rs. 1.6 lakh as compensation.
