Government of India Tamil Fishermen Srilankan Jail Madras High Court

Case Name: G.Thirumurugan @ Theeran Thirumurugan v. Union of India and Ors.

Case No: WP(MD) 23290 of 2021

The Madras High Court has ordered the Indian government to continue its efforts and to use any existing agreements in order to secure the release of 68 fishermen imprisoned in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan Navy and Coast Guard apprehended the bench of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy, together with their vessels.

The court praised the government of India's efforts, which were aided by the government of the United States through diplomatic channels.

The court also evaluated how the arrested fishermen's families were impacted by the situation.

The court also declared that it lacked territorial authority over the foreign government's affairs and could only advise them to continue their efforts. As a result, it was instructed to transmit copies of the order to the government so that it could take the appropriate measures.
