Former Samajwadi Party leader and Member of Rajya Sabha, Amar Singh Dies At 64

Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha Amar Singh Dies

On August 1st, 2020, Saturday Amar Singh who was counted as one of India’s most influential icons has passed away at the age of 64 in Singapore. He had kidney-related issues for which he was treated in the Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore where he was admitted eight months ago. Amar Singh had a Kidney transplant in 2011 and he was facing illness for a long time. He is survived by wife Pankaja and twin daughters Drishti and Disha.

Amar Singh was an Indian Politician from the state of Uttar Pradesh. He was the general secretary of the Samajwadi Party and was a member of Rajya Sabha. On 6th January 2010, he resigned from the SP, and later the Chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav expelled him from SP on 2nd February 2010. He was elected as a member of Rajya Sabha in 1996 but after the expulsion, he was again elected in 2016 with the support from SP.   

In 2015, a book by an American Author claimed that Singh contributed between $1 million to $5 million to the Clinton Foundation in 2008. The author also speculated whether Singh was ‘conduit for other powerful interest in India pushing for approval for the nuke deal’ Singh had denied the allegations.

Amar Singh was also known for his connections from industry, politics, and Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan, the legendary actor was among his closest friend from the industry. Singh had friends in all political parties due to which he was also part of controversies. 

On Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s 100th birthday, Amar Singh posted messages on Twitter, paying Tribute and wishing people Eid. PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, and several other political leaders conveyed condolences to the family of Amar Singh and remembered him as a leader who had made friends across the political spectrum. Not only the political leaders but Amitabh Bachchan also tweeted a photo and a Hindi couplet expressing his grief over the death of Amar Singh.

‘Amar Singh was an energetic public figure. In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his friends and family. Om Shanti’ said PM Narendra Modi.
