'A possibility of complete prohibition on Elephants being kept as captive animals for various temple duties': Madras High Court [READ ORDER]

The Madras High Court was dealing with a plea that sought the necessary action to be taken to ensure that the strays are provided with food and water in this COVID-19 pandemic.

The court further guided the Husbandry Department of the State to devise a plan that deals with taking care of the stray animals in a humane way.

Whatever the measures are adopted, there should be a humane and ethical treatment of animals in this State, including providing for food in the event the pandemic throws up further waves during which lockdowns are declared and animals are left abandoned or without food", added the court.

The court appreciated the steps taken by the State Government to feed stray animals and thanked the donations made by the Governor and the State, which were a total of 9 lakh rupees.

The Court further elucidates the necessity for a comprehensive program that humanely deals with animals.

Going through another pending petition, the court stated that it must be ensured that elephants are no longer kept in captivity.

The court requested the animal lovers of the State to keep a strict watch on how the animals are treated so that decency can always be maintained.
