Policy Needed to Take Care Of Paddy Sacks

Taking into account media reports, the Madras High Court instituted suo motu proceedings in connection with the plight of farmers who are suffering as their paddy sacks become soaked in rain.

The Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy observed that some approach or measure should be demonstrated to deal with the paddy that is collected and at times left to dry in open fields, especially in June, whenever there is probability of a substantial deluge.

While expressing hope, the court  directed that the matter be heard in a week's time and stated,

"That appropriate measures would be taken and put in place even before the matter appears next, especially given the threat of additional rain in the coming days."

Under Article 226 of the Constitution,  the Court was presiding over the writ petition for the issuance of a writ of Mandamus directing the respondents that open paddy acquirement centres in those areas  where the development is for a bigger scope, without the farmers making representation for procuring their products,as they fear that if the rain continues, the paddy bags will sprout due to a lack of proper storage facilities, and to file a report with this court

The case has been rescheduled for a hearing on June 17, 2021.
