President Droupadi Murmu on August 11 gave assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Amendment Act 2026, making intentional disruption of Vande Mataram punishable by up to three years in prison. The national song now holds the same legal protection as Jana Gana Mana, 76 years after the Constituent Assembly declared parity.
