From coming week, people found littering or spitting in and around Connaught Place will be fined up to Rs 50 as New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) plans to deploy 100 civic wardens for ensuring cleanliness in the downtown shopping hub on a pilot basis.
The civic wardens will be on the job in two shifts - 8am to 2pm and 2pm to 8pm. They will not only keep an eye on violators, but also coordinate with relevant department to fix lapses, a senior NDMC official said.
The wardens will be stationed at all eight radial roads, inner, middle and outer circles of CP in equal number, considering lakhs of people visit the area daily.
They will be authorised to issue an on-the-spot challan of up to Rs 50 and wear uniforms so that they can be easily spotted.
"These wardens will also be responsible for removing illegal hawkers, vehicles parked on the roadsides, easing traffic congestion, reporting damages to government properties, checking cleanliness inside public toilets, potholes on the roads and missing parking attendants," NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar said.
This is a long overdue step to ensure that the sprawling circular market remains a beautiful and clean area to visit in Delhi.
