'9000 Companies Devastated, COVID Surged Due to Farmer Protests': Human Rights Commission Writes to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan Governments

The National Human  Rights Commission (NHRC) announced on Tuesday (September 14, 2021), that it had issued notices to the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan in response to complaints about industrial units and transportation brought down by the ongoing farmer's protest at the Delhi border.

The NHRC stated that it had "received several complaints regarding the ongoing farmer's protest," including the disruption of approximately 9,000 industrial units and transportation.

Transportation is said to be negatively impacted as well, causing commuters, patients, physically challenged people, and senior citizens to suffer as a result of heavy traffic on roads. There are also reports that people must travel long distances to reach their destinations, and that border barricades have been erected, " NHRC said in statement.

There is also an allegation that residents are not being allowed to leave their homes due to the blockade of the passage, according to the report.

According to the statement, the commission has issued notices to the chief secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi, as well as the director generals of police in the three states and the Delhi Police Commissioner, requesting that they submit their respective action taken reports.

The commission directed the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) to investigate and report on the negative impact of the farmer's agitation on industrial and commercial activities / production, as well as disruption of transportation services on commercial and ordinary consumers, including inconvenience and additional expenditure, among other things.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Health have been asked to submit reports on the negative impact of farmer agitation on various aspects, as well as the observance of COVID protocols at protest sites, according to the statement.

Furthermore, it has issued a notice to the district magistrate of Jhajjar in Haryana in the case of an alleged gang rape of a human rights activist at the protest site and requested a response by October 10, 2021. It has effectively issued a new reminder to the official to file a report.
