United Nations Special Rapporteur approaches SC. Request not to deport Rohingya migrants living in India. Govt agrees to reply on the request. Hearing in March.
In an unprecedented move, Ms. Tendayi Achiume, United Nation's Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, files Petition in Supreme Court. She is based in US.
Lawyer C U Singh, Senior Advocate, appearing for the Special Rapporteur, mentioned the IA before the bench and asked for notice to be issued to the Government of India. Given that the case deals with the fundamental issue of India's obligations towards refugee protection, the Application seeks to assist the Court by providing the Special Rapporteur's expert opinion on India's human rights obligations to racial equality and non-discrimination in light of the international Conventions signed and ratified by India. The bench made note of the IA and the government has agreed to file a reply to the same.
