There should be no quota within quota, asserts Sr Adv Mahalakshmi Pavani over I.N.D.I.A bloc's demand for sub-quota within Womens Reservation Bill

By Lawstreet Bharat      21 September, 2023 06:51 PM      0 Comments

The last thing we want is to create sub-quotas for women. Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani emphasized that the call for sub-quotas within the Women's Reservation Bill is not relevant. A woman is a woman, and we should not segregate them based on caste!

The senior advocate argued that the demand for reservations within reservations is not applicable in this context. It is worth noting that Congress parliamentary party chief Sonia Gandhi and former party president Rahul Gandhi have raised their demand for reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SCs/STs) within the women's quota.

For further insights into the historical bill, please watch the entire interview.

Glorification of Women versus Belligerent Female Foeticide in India Glorification of Women versus Belligerent Female Foeticide in India

In Voluntary Health Assn. of Punjab v. Union of India, (2013) 4 SCC 1, the Supreme Court in its watershed judgment on female foeticidedecided it to be the most aggravated form of dehumanization of the human race. The court was observed to have stated that the"Law prohibits it; Scriptures forbid it; philosophy condemns it; ethics deprecate it; morality decries it, and social science abhors it. Its time the executive pulled up its socks and tightened the noose around implementation of the PC & PNDT Act. The duality around women with exhalation of deities and contrasting blatant disregard for their basic human rights needs to break the confounds of mere academic debate and reinforce the tenets on which the Constitution of India rests.
