Kochi; The Kerala High Court recently expressed its shock while hearing a plea moved by a married woman who was given tips by her in-laws to conceive a male child, on the first day after her marriage.
Asking a woman to give birth only to a boy child and not a girl child is horrendously demoralising and immoral, Justice Devan Ramachandran reportedly observed.
Adding on, the judge said that it was high time to stop propagating that girl children are lesser than the latter.
This thing should stop; it has to stop. This feeling that girl child is lesser than boy child should stopIt is woman who bring life to the Earth.
What violation of law could come in when a husband or in-law demands that a lady only bear boy children?" the court asked while adding that this question requires grave attention and thought.
In this case, on the very first day after marriage, her husband and his family gave the petitioner a chit with instructions on how to conceive a boy child. In accordance with the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, she sought action against them.
The husband and his family (father-in-law and mother-in-law) were impleaded as additional respondents in the matter by the Court while directing them to file their reply.
Advocate P M Rafeek submitted that the alleged note was only a verbatim production of an article published in a magazine. Additionally, it was claimed that because the Family was still involved in divorce and custody issues, the woman was now making these accusations. The matter will be taken up next week for further hearing.
