On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court granted bail to human rights activist Gautam Navlakha, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon riot case of 2018.
A division bench of Justices AS Gadkari and SG Dige imposed certain conditions while granting bail.
Notably, the High Court has stayed the operation bail order for three weeks so that the National Investigation Agency may appeal against the order before the Supreme Court, if need be.
Navlakha was lodged in prison initially. Later, he was shifted to his house and placed under house arrest in November 2022, owing to his advanced age by the Supreme Court.
Navlakha had moved his bail application before the High Court even earlier. Before the High Court, the NIA opposed the bail plea and stated that Navlakha was part of an urban movement to arrange for logistics for the rural Naxal movement.
Navlakha is accused of offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code as well as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA].
