Char Dham road expansion Supreme Court

Supreme Court allows Central Govt to construct all weather-roads of 10m width as a part of the project, some of which are strategic feeder roads leading to Indo-China border.

SC notes that recent past has thrown up serious challenges to security along the borders. "This court can't second-guess infrastructural needs of armed forces," holds the court

In a big victory for NDA government, SC allows double lane paved shoulder (DLPS) for Chardham road project, a prestigious one for NDA government, taking into account their strategic importance for armed forces and keeping in mind the recent developments in the Indo-China border.

SC bench led by Justice D Y Chandrachud said it struck a delicate balance between requirement of widening strategic roads crucial to national security and deep-rooted sustainable development principle crucial to environment.

Also sets up an oversight committee under Justice (retd) AK Sikri to report to court on the project.
