NEW DELHI: Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Krishan Kaul has underwent a successful gall bladder surgery at hospital in the national capital on Monday.
Justice Kaul is stable now. He is likely to be discharged in a day or two, Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Board of Management of the Sir Ganga Ram hospital, said.
64-year-old Justice Kaul, the second senior most judge, was admitted to the hospital on Monday, after he had complained of abdomen pain. Scans were performed. A surgery was advised considering the number and size of stones, a press statement said.
A team of doctors led by Dr Saumitra Rawat, Chairman and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant conducted the procedure through a laparoscope.
Gall stones is a condition where calcified stone-like structures form inside the gall bladder, and cholecystitis is a sudden inflammation of the gall bladder. Both conditions can be immensely painful and in some cases life threatening even, the statement said.
"About 8 am on Tuesday, Justice Kaul was taken to the operation theatre for surgery, which was over in one hour," it added.
Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud visited Justice Kaul at the hospital on Monday.
Justice Kaul, who was elevated as judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2017, is scheduled to retire on December 25, 2023.
