New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry on Friday ordered an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the matter of 'sub-standard' medicines in mohalla clinics.
Notably, Mohalla clinics were set up by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi under its flagship healthcare project.
This came a day after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena called for an investigation by the CBI into alleged fake pathology and radiology tests at the clinics.
There were allegations that "lakhs of tests" were conducted on "ghost patients" at these clinics to aid private laboratories in the national capital.
While reacting to the lieutenant governor's recommendation of a CBI investigation, Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday said that his repeated directions for regular inspection of mohalla clinics to improve and strengthen the quality of services were regularly ignored by the Delhi health secretary.
"Who has appointed the directorate general of health services (DGHS)? Who has appointed the health secretary? We have not appointed them. The officials chosen by them (LG) are engaging in malpractices and they are recommending the CBI investigation. They are launching a probe against their chosen ones, not against us," Bharadwaj said in a press conference on Thursday.
Reportedly, according to a vigilance department report that was submitted to LG Saxena, of the 43 samples of drugs that were sent for testing to government laboratories, three failed and 12 reports were pending. Further, out of another 43 samples sent to private laboratories, five failed.
