NUJS Students unite in support of Professor in Sexual Harassment allegations against Vice Chancellor

Kolkata: In a bold display of solidarity, students of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) have publicly voiced their support for Associate Professor Vaneeta Patnaik, who has been embroiled in a legal battle against the current Vice Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor faces serious allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct, reportedly occurring from September 2019 to December 2023.

The students' collective statement highlights the severe repercussions faced by Prof. Patnaik, including retaliation, delays in salary, and professional threats. Despite these challenges, Prof. Patnaik's unwavering courage has brought to light the pressing issue of sexual harassment within the institution.

"We condemn the misuse of power by the Vice Chancellor and the complicit actions of the University Administration and PoSH Committee," the statement reads. The students criticize the committee's dismissal of Prof. Patnaik's complaint on technical grounds, arguing that such actions undermine the principles of safety and integrity that NUJS stands for, creating a hostile environment for both students and faculty.

The student body has laid out clear demands: protection for Prof. Patnaik from further victimization, an unbiased investigation into the allegations, suspension of the Vice Chancellor from his duties, and an explanation for the refusal to recuse himself from meetings held to address Prof. Patnaik's complaints. Additionally, they oppose any extension of the Vice Chancellor's term, citing a loss of faith and confidence in his ability to lead the institution.

"In light of the letter dated May 25, 2024, pleading the Honble Chief Justice of India, also Chancellor of NUJS, to take cognizance of the situation, we implore his Honble Lordship to act on the legal mandate provided to him under the NUJS Act," the statement concludes. The students urge for immediate action to salvage the institutional reputation of NUJS and ensure a safe environment for all students, victim-survivors, and those from vulnerable communities.

This unfolding situation at NUJS underscores the urgent need for transparent and fair handling of sexual harassment allegations within educational institutions, ensuring that justice and safety remain paramount.
