NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday directed for stay on demolition of Curlies hotel at Goa following the order issued by the National Green Tribunal for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
The hotel came into limelight after death of BJP leader from Haryana and actor Sonali Phogat on August 23.
A bench of Chief Justice U U Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and P S Narasimha fixed the matter for hearing on September 16, 2022, while suspending the order for bringing down the structure.
The bench directed the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority to file its reply before Wednesday in connection with the matter along with pictures and reports.
The court issued notice to the Goa government and GCZMA and directed the hotel to suspend commercial operation till the petition challenging demolition is decided by it.
The National Green Tribunal has recently rejected an appeal filed by the owner of Curlies beach shack in Goas Anjuna against a 2016 order of the GCZMA for demolition of its structures, allegedly in violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.
After the death of Phogat, the Goa Police arrested Edwin Nunes, the owner of the shack, under the NDPS Act as Methamphetamine, allegedly given to the actor, was found in the bathroom of the shack.
Nunes was subsequently granted bail by a court in Mapusa.
