Suo Moto Powers of NGT

Today, the SC will continue hearing a group of petitions challenging the suo moto powers of the National Green Tribunal.

NGT claims it has suo moto powers under Section 19 of the NGT Act, 2021.

The Union previously stated that NGT may institute a case based on a letter, but not on its own.

Amicus Anand Grover argued that NGT has no suo moto powers.

The Court had previously framed two issues in this case.

Does the NGT have suo moto powers?

Can the NGT take suo moto cognisance of a matter pending at the SC/HC?
