New Delhi: Justice Tarun Agarwala, former Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court and ex-Presiding Officer of the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT), passed away in the early hours of March 29 due to a heart attack. Despite all efforts to revive him, he could not be saved. His demise is a significant loss to the Indian judiciary, where he made substantial contributions over the years.
Born in 1978, Justice Agarwala pursued a Bachelor of Arts from Allahabad University before earning his law degree from the University of Allahabad. He enrolled as an advocate on December 9, 1981, and built a distinguished legal career at the Allahabad High Court, specializing in civil law, constitutional law, taxation, labour disputes, corporate affairs, and testamentary matters. His expertise and sharp legal mind earned him immense respect in legal circles.
After serving as a judge in the Uttarakhand High Court, he returned to the Allahabad High Court on October 17, 2012. Later, he was elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, where he took the oath on February 12, 2018. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping judicial decisions in the state.
Post-retirement, Justice Agarwala was appointed as the Presiding Officer of the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) in 2018. In this role, he was instrumental in handling appeals related to securities laws, investor protection, and financial regulations. His tenure at SAT saw him presiding over crucial cases involving market participants and regulatory bodies.
