The United States formally removed Syria from its State Sponsors of Terrorism list on August 24, ending a 47-year designation and simultaneously delisting Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as a global terrorist organisation. Secretary Rubio called the move a recognition of "positive actions" by President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government. Cuba, Iran and North Korea remain on the list.
