New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has expressed its strong condemnation of the brutal and inhuman act of rape and murder committed against a young postgraduate trainee doctor while she was on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. This shocking incident has sent ripples of horror and outrage throughout the legal community and the nation.
In response to this heinous crime, the Executive Committee of the DHCBA convened an emergency meeting to address the issue and to formulate a collective response. During this meeting, the Committee unanimously passed a resolution that echoed the sentiments of anguish and anger shared by many.
The resolution declared, "We condemn the barbaric and brutal incident of rape and murder of an innocent and young postgraduate trainee doctor while on duty at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. We appeal to the investigating agencies to take stringent actions against the perpetrators at the earliest."
The Committee also took the opportunity to call on both the Central and State Governments to implement necessary measures to prevent such atrocities in the future. "We appeal to the Central Government and State Governments to take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents to repose faith in the minds of the general public and improve security for women across the country," the resolution stated.
In a display of solidarity with the victim's family and a commitment to justice, the DHCBA has also resolved to offer pro-bono legal assistance to the families of victims in similar cases. This move underscores the Association’s dedication to ensuring that justice is served and that the guilty are held accountable.
Furthermore, as a mark of protest and to pay homage to the victim, the members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association have decided to wear white ribbon bands on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. This symbolic gesture reflects the collective mourning and resolve of the legal fraternity to stand against such heinous crimes.
All members of the Bar are requested to join in this protest and to cooperate in the collective effort to seek justice and support the victim’s family during this difficult time.
