"Experts Say Your Beautiful Cars Also Contribute to Air Pollution," CJI SA Bobde Says While Hearing Stubble Burning Issue

By Pavitra Shetty      30 October, 2020 05:47 PM      0 Comments

On Thursday (October 29, 2020), Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde was seen quoting that stubble burning was alone, not responsible for the air pollution in the Delhi NCR region, and cited that vehicular emissions are also another important contributory factor.

Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde during hearing a petition on air pollution in the court said We would like you to stop using your beautiful cars which you wont do. We must all go out on bicycles not motorcycles but bicycles.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh owns multiple SUVs and the latest BMWs, Volkswagens, and Mercedes and this sarcastic remark were for him.

The above statement was said because Senior Advocate Vikas Singh said that the law would be of no use and that he had gone through the ordinance and by the time it is passed the air quality will get even worst.

Vikas Singh argued for letting the Lokur committee function while the ordinance creating a statutory expert body to deal with the problem took off.

The Lokur committee is headed by Former SC Judge, Justice Madan B. Lokur

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government had notified an ordinance bringing a statutory body into existence to deal with the problem.

The Ordinance is named "Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas"

The bench is also comprised of Justices AS Bopanna & V. Ramasubramaniun.

The bench passed the order based on a request made by the Solicitor General of India, Mr. Tushar Mehta after he stated that the Central Government was bringing comprehensive legislation to set up a permanent body to address the problem of stubble burning.

Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde assured Senior Advocate Vikas Singh that no orders will be passed without taking into account suggestions put forth by the petitioners
