BHOPAL: Can you drink water while in the court? Well, to many, the answer seems to be an obvious 'yes'.

But this was not the case in Madhya Pradhesh High Court as per a video clip that has been making rounds on social media.

The video revealed Justice Rohit Arya of the Madhya Pradesh High Court getting irked when he noted a law student seated in the visitor's gallery inside the courtroom, having a sip of water from his personal bottle.

The judge promptly questioned him. "Have you learned basic manners on how to sit in the Court?"

To which, the law student replied that he was a of the National Law University, Patiala, attending the court for the first time as part of his internship.

According to the judge, what the student did was beyond courtroom etiquette.

"I've always reminded you all that you cannot sit here and drink water or coffee. This is not a cafeteria. If you want to drink water, you go outside and drink water. You cannot just open your bottle and start drinking water in the courtroom," he said.

The student was quick to offer an apology. While the date as to when the incident occurred is unclear, this has sparked debates on what courtroom etiquette really is.

Glorification of Women versus Belligerent Female Foeticide in India Glorification of Women versus Belligerent Female Foeticide in India

In Voluntary Health Assn. of Punjab v. Union of India, (2013) 4 SCC 1, the Supreme Court in its watershed judgment on female foeticide decided it to be the most aggravated form of dehumanization of the human race. The court was observed to have stated that the "Law prohibits it; Scriptures forbid it; philosophy condemns it; ethics deprecate it; morality decries it, and social science abhors it.” It’s time the executive pulled up its socks and tightened the noose around implementation of the PC & PNDT Act. The duality around women with exhalation of deities and contrasting blatant disregard for their basic human rights needs to break the confounds of mere academic debate and reinforce the tenets on which the Constitution of India rests.
