New Delhi: In a strong and unequivocal stance, the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA) has condemned the recent physical assault on a woman advocate by a senior lawyer in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The assault, which reportedly occurred in the senior’s office and has been widely covered by news platforms, has triggered widespread outrage within the legal community.
In a sharply worded official statement issued by SCWLA President Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, the association expressed “deep outrage” and described the incident as a reprehensible act that must not go unpunished. She emphasized that the attack was not just a violation of one woman’s dignity, but a blow to the core values of the legal profession—respect, integrity, and justice.
The SCWLA’s statement, backed by its full executive committee, termed the assault a gross violation of safety and professional ethics—especially in a field that must ensure equality and dignity for all, regardless of gender. “The workplace, particularly within the noble profession of law, must be a space where individuals are treated with dignity and equality,” the release noted.
Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, a prominent voice for women in law, asserted that appropriate legal action must be taken promptly and called upon the Bar Council and other relevant authorities to initiate strong disciplinary measures against the accused senior advocate. She also hailed the courage of the survivor, stating, “Her voice must not go in vain.”
Highlighting systemic issues, the statement described the incident as a “chilling reminder” of the gender-based injustices and power imbalances that continue to plague the legal profession.
The SCWLA stressed the urgent need for structural reforms, gender sensitization, and stronger grievance redressal mechanisms.
Reaffirming their collective commitment to justice, Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani urged all members of the Bar to stand united in defending the rights and dignity of every lawyer—irrespective of gender or seniority.
