The amended Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill were passed today in the absence of 97 suspended opposition MPs.
The initially proposed amendment Bills were first introduced in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of Parliament, however were referred to a department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
The Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita which replaces the IPC comprises 358 Sections. The contentious Section 124A of the IPC on sedition has been replaced with a similar provision has been added to the proposed legislation with Section 152 which punishes acts 'endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.'
Notably, organised crime, terrorism, and murder by a group of five or more on the basis caste, language or personal belief have also been added as offences.
