Google Maps COVID layer

With the rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, Google has come up with a new feature on Android and iOS for Google Maps which will be known as the COVID layer.

This new update will be of great use for the users to detect the COVID cases in a particular area and to make a quick and easy decision whether to go to that area or not. This will ensure their safety to a great extent.

Google in its blog post said that it will add a number of distinguishing features in this new update. The information that it will provide will be collected from different sources like the New York Times, Wikipedia which itself gets information from various health organizations like the World Health Organization, local hospitals, etc.

The users will have to follow the following procedure-

  1. First, they need to open Google Maps.
  2. Then they need to tap the layers button on the top right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Finally, click the Covid-19 info.

There they will get a seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100000 people for the area. They will also be able to detect whether cases are moving up or down.

This new update along with the color-coding feature will be available for all the countries and territories that google maps support.
