Mumbai — Mumbai Police have registered a case of attempted murder against three unidentified persons after unidentified assailants opened fire at a car belonging to Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in the city's Juhu area on Sunday evening, October 18, 2026. The actor escaped unhurt, while his driver and another individual present at the scene sustained injuries. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation from the local Juhu police station given the seriousness of the offence.
Unidentified assailants opened fire at Shroff's car in Juhu on Sunday evening. Mumbai Police confirmed that Shroff himself suffered no gunshot wounds. His driver was injured in the elbow and palm. CCTV footage has since surfaced showing images of two suspected shooters believed to have carried out the attack on a motorbike. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited Shroff's residence on Sunday night following the incident.
The Investigation
The case was initially registered by the Juhu police station before being transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch, which has formed 15 teams to track down the shooters. According to police sources, the case was handed to the Crime Branch in part because the unit has handled earlier investigations connected to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. A police official said investigators were examining all possible angles to the case, including potential links to the Bishnoi network, though tracking down the three unidentified shooters remains the primary challenge for law enforcement, with further investigation underway.
A gang claiming to be the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has asserted responsibility for the attack through a viral social media post, but police have stated they have not yet been able to verify the authenticity of that claim. A separate threatening audio message has also reportedly surfaced in connection with the incident, according to local reporting, though its authenticity and specific content have not been independently confirmed through official police statements reviewed for this report.
Legal Framework
The FIR has been registered on charges of attempt to murder, a cognizable and non-bailable offence addressed under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which succeeded the erstwhile Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code governing attempted murder. Given that the attack involved the use of firearms, the case is also expected to attract charges under the Arms Act, 1959, which governs the possession, use and illegal discharge of firearms in India.
Investigators may additionally invoke provisions relating to criminal conspiracy, under Section 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (corresponding to the erstwhile Section 120B IPC), should evidence emerge of a planned, multi-person operation behind the attack, consistent with the pattern seen in previous Mumbai Crime Branch investigations into shootings linked to organised crime networks.
The transfer of the case from the local Juhu police station to the Mumbai Crime Branch follows standard procedure for offences assessed as serious or potentially linked to organised criminal networks operating across multiple jurisdictions, allowing a specialised unit with greater investigative resources, including dedicated teams and access to broader intelligence networks, to take charge of the probe.
The claim of responsibility attributed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, while unverified by police at this stage, follows a documented pattern of threats and attacks linked to the gang against Bollywood figures in recent years. In April 2024, two shooters linked to the gang, acting on the instructions of Lawrence Bishnoi's brother Anmol Bishnoi, opened fire outside actor Salman Khan's Bandra residence, an incident that similarly saw the case transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch, multiple arrests over subsequent weeks, and the eventual recovery of evidence including a weapon disposed of in the Tapi River in Surat.
Lawrence Bishnoi has separately been named by Indian investigators in connection with the 2022 killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, and his network has been linked by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to a broader pattern of extortion, racketeering and violence targeting public figures, resulting in the recent placement of alleged Bishnoi lieutenant Satinderjeet Singh, known as Goldy Brar, on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.
