KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has disposed of a plea that raised concerns against the alleged negative and defamatory portrayal of the a character in the upcoming Mammotty-starrer Malayalam film Bramayugam.
The petitioner, representing Punjamon Illam, a traditional Brahmin household in Kerala, had argued that the portrayal of "Kunjumon Potty" in the film was negative and defamatory and could potentially harm the family's reputation.
Against this, the makers of the film told the court that the character name in dispute has been changed to address concerns that the film may involve a negative portrayal of one "Kunjumon Potty."
The movie is scheduled to be released tomorrow.
The filmmakers' counsel stated they had applied to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to change the character's name to "Kodumon Potty." This was confirmed by the Central Government counsel.
The plea was based on Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, dealing with defamatory materials.
The petitioner had sought to revoke the certification of the film under Section 5E of the Act if the respondents wouldn't comply with their demand to change the name of the character.
As per the plea, the filmmakers have also stated the traditional home of the lead character Kunjamon Illam, similar to the petitioners house name.
The plea contended that storyline deviates from an accurate portrayal of the petitioner's ancestors and appears to have been fabricated solely to defame the petitioner and their family.
The plea has been moved by Advocate G Sreekumar Chelur.
