Supreme Court OTT release Why I killed Gandhi

A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, asking for a stay on the screening of the film "Why I Killed Gandhi," which is slated to be released on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday.

According to a petition filed by Sikandar Behl through lawyer Anuj Bhandari, the film aims to malign and damage the image of the Father of the Nation by glorifying Nathuram Godse and celebrating his murder of Mahatma Gandhi through the movie "Why I killed Gandhi".

The petitioner claims that if the film's publication and screening are not halted, it will irreversibly destroy the image of the Father of the Nation and generate public turmoil, hostility, and disharmony.

The petitioner claims that the film is intended to cause communal strife, disseminate hatred, and disrupt tranquilly.

It further stated that the film had not been cleared by the censor board and that it will be released on the OTT platform 'Limelight' on January 30.

The film was made in 2017 but never saw the light of day. Amol Kolhe, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a Member of Parliament (MP), is playing Godse in the film.

According to the petitioner, an attempt is made in the movie's 2 minutes 20-second teaser to blame Mahatma Gandhi for the partition of India and crimes against Hindus in Pakistan, and so an attempt is made to justify Mahatma Gandhi's death. According to the petitioner, the film has not been cleared by the CBFC and will be released on the OTT Platform.

The petitioner also sought that OTT platforms be regulated, as they are currently outside of the censor board's jurisdiction, and unregulated and uncensored content is being published on a variety of OTT platforms.
