FIR over celebratory congregations on poll victory

On Sunday (May 2, 2021), the Election Commission said that it has taken a stern view on the reports of congregation of people to celebrate anticipated election victory and has asked the chief secretaries concerned to file an FIR in each case and suspend the police station in charge where such gatherings happened. Victory processions were banned on the counting day to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The spokesman said that,

"The EC had directed chief secretaries of all five states which to file FIR in each such case, suspend the SHO of the concerned police station and report the action taken immediately of each such incidence."

Yesterday, counting of votes for the assembly polls in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry was held. Several political parties asked their members, not to hold celebratory congregations in the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic situation. However, they continued to do so, thus forcing action as stated above.
