Matrimonial Sites: Finding Partner or Imposter?

Since finding mates has become a problematic issue nowadays. In search of right and deserving partners as per their specific criteria, people have now started searching their life partners on matrimonial sites such as Shaadi.com, Jeevansathi.com and many more. Though, it is uncertain that people will find their choice of the partner here or not but at least it provides a particular place to find your mate as per your requirements.

However, a very shocking incident happened last month in which a team of Cyber Crime arrested an imposter from Dwarka, who cheated, blackmailed and befooled the victims by uploading fake profiles of himself on matrimonial sites. Police suspected that he might have duped six women in the past two years.

The accused is a 41-year-old BBA degree holder from Lucknow who has been charged for impersonation, cheating, blackmail, extortion and sexual assault. Though, the man is married and having a son but showed himself as a high class and single man before all his victims. He used to select a target and create a profile suiting her requirements on the matrimonial website.

In one of the cases, he posed as one Siddharth Walia and introduced himself as the head of a sports channel based in Mumbai in which he claimed to be looking for a bride and started chatting with the woman. In another case, he posed as one Sidharth Oberoi, the head of a sports channel based in Dubai and in another case, he introduced himself as the vice president of a prominent American news broadcaster to lure the victim.

Now, the most distorting question is that creating a Facebook account is no longer different from creating an account on matrimonial site? As on Facebook, people can create multiple accounts even with changed identities at the same time due to which it has lost its reliability from a bonafide user's point of view. Similarly, this incident has pointed out many fingers on the owners of these matrimonial sites that knowing the sensitivity and concern of those users who are intending to search and find out a life partner will lose the level of trust on these websites.

Will the owners of these matrimonial sites not stand accountable for not being able to provide a safe and legitimate account privacy system, lacking which such incident of fake identity has happened and perhaps more will come in the future. Finding a partner is a sensitive issue for everyone then why no security assurance has been made by these matrimonial sites that anybody could create multiple accounts by using a fake identity.
