Odisha Minor Girl Mercilessly Thrashed

Days after a minor girl from a remote village in Nabarangpur district was brutally thrashed, police on Wednesday (7 October 2020) arrested three persons in this connection.

The arrests were made after a video of the incident went viral on social media. In the viral video, some youths were seen mercilessly beating and kicking the minor girl as while she cried helplessly.

As reported, police launched a probe after the viral video surfaced and learned that the incident took place in Kundei Police limits of Raighar block.

Police said the girl was assaulted over her love affair and the assaulters seen in the video are her relatives.

The girl was in love with a youth of the same locality. As the duo belongs to different castes, the villagers were opposing their relation, Ramchandra Agasti, IIC of Kundei police station said.

On the day of the incident, the girl was talking to her boyfriend when her family members caught them. They then thrashed the girl. Three persons have been arrested in this connection, Agasti said. The IIC added that efforts are underway to arrest other accused involved in the assault.

According to sources, soon after the incident, a kangaroo court had ordered the girls family to pay Rs 20,000 while the boys family was asked to pay Rs 60,000. The kangaroo court had also threatened to ostracize the families in case they failed to pay the penalty.

Under pressure, the girls family paid Rs 10,000 while the boys family deposited Rs 25,000 with the village court.
