Tihar Jail Inmate forced to chant Jai Shree Ram

Zafar, an undertrial prisoner, arrested in 2018 was beaten up and forced to chant Jai Shree Ram. A Special NIA Court in Delhi sought responses of the Tihar Jail Authorities by filing a report.

Zafar was arrested for allegedly being a member of Islamic State on the allegations that he was involved in planning suicide attacks and serial blasts by targeting politicians and other officials in Delhi and other areas.

Zafar approached the court earlier this week, seeking directions to be passed on to the Superintendent of the Jail to look into the matter.

Special NIA Judge Praveen Singh sought response after a plea, moved by Advocate MS Khan, alleged that Zafar, currently lodged in Central Jail Tihar was "beaten up and forced to chant religious slogans of another religion by his inmates."

The plea read, This incident was disclosed by the applicant to his father telephonically from Tihar Jail."

Reportedly, Zafar was arrested in December, 2018, along with nine other accused people after NIA carried out searches in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
