BBMP Polls To Get Postponed

On March 27, 2020, the Karnataka government decided to postpone the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections until further noticeCurrently the Bengaluru's municipal corporation is in works.

The BS Yediyurappa led BJP government that had tried to push the BBMP 2020 bill had previously indicated that it was not keen on holding the elections as per schedule that is before 1st September, 2020.

Law minister JC Madhuswamy said, "We will submit to the high court that BBMP elections cannot be held any time soon. The government has taken up the delimitation process of all 224 assembly constituencies and even BBMP wards, which is not a small exercise. Also, we need time to finalise and implement the new legislation for the city."

Further to which he also said that the pandemic of Covid-19 is to delay the legislation process further. "Had it been under normal circumstances, we could have told the HC and ensured that the select committee will have at least three or four sittings and give the legislation a final shape. However in the wake of pandemic, we are yet to even finalise the members for the panel from all the three parties. It will take us no less than six to eight months to complete the entire process in the current scenario."
