NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Justice D Y Chandrachud, second senior most in the Supreme Court, as executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority with immediate effect.
A notification in this regard was issued on Friday, September 2.
The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 enjoined the central government to constitute a body to be called the National Legal Services Authority to exercise the powers and perform the functions of the central authority.
The central authority consisted of the Chief Justice of India as the Patron-in-Chief, and a serving or retired Judge of the Supreme Court to be nominated by the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, as executive chairman.
The term of Justice Chandrachud would last till November 8 as he is succeed Chief Justice of India U U Lalit in order of seniority of judges in the Supreme Court.
