Punjab Govt. Withdraws 'General Consent' Granted to CBI to Investigate Cases in the State

The CBI (Delhi Special Police Establishment) was conferred powers by several states to investigate cases without the permission of the respective State Government and with general consent. Recently, a number of states withdrew this general consent given to CBI. The government of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal withdrew 'general consent' in 2018.

The government of Rajasthan withdrew it in July 2020, the Maharashtra government on October 2020, and the Kerala government last week in November 2020.

And now on November 9, 2020, the government of Punjab also withdrew the 'general consent' given to CBI to investigate the cases without the permission of the state government.

It said that as per Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act,1946, CBI now cannot exercise without prior permission. It has to take the permission of the State Government now to investigate any case of that particular state.
