R Venkataramani Appointed As New Attorney General of India

NEW DELHI: Senior Advocate R Venkataramani has been appointed as Attorney General for India for a period of three years.

The notification on his appointment was issued by the Law Ministry on Wednesday.

In a statement, he said, "I am very thankful to Prime Minister, Home Minister and Law Minister for placing confidence on me to take up this sensitive assignment. I only wish and pray...I would be able to discharge my responsibility to the best of my ability without fear or favour or ill-will."

This comes days after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi declined the offer to return as the top law officer of the country. Rohatgi had served as the A-G for a period of three years during the first term of the Narendra Modi government.

Venkataramani, 72, is scheduled to assume the office on October 1 as extended term of incumbent Attorney General K K Venugopal is to end on September 30.

Venugopal, 91, has expressed his reluctance to continue further due to his advancing age.

Venkataramani has experience of over 45 years as lawyer. He has earlier represented the Union and state governments in various constitutional matters. He has also been a member of the Law Commission of India in 2010 and 2013.

Venkataramani got himself enrolled in July 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and joined the chambers of late senior advocate P P Rao, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court in 1979.

He started an independent practice in the Supreme Court in the year 1982.

He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in the year 1997.

He has also been associated with National Law School of India University, Bangaluru.
