UP govt to SC: court can appoint a retd judge to supervise SIT probe into Oct 3 Lakhimpur Kheri incidents

Uttar Pradesh Govt Supreme Court Lakhimpur Kheri

UP govt tells SC that court can appoint a retd judge (SC had suggested ex-Punjab and Haryana HC Judges - Justices Ranjit Singh/Rakesh K Jain) to supervise SIT probe into Oct 3 Lakhimpur Kheri incidents - mowing down of 4 farmers, lynching of 3 accused and murder of a journalist.

SC says it needs one more day's time. "We are considering former Punjab and Haryana HC Judge Rakesh Kumar Jain or others. We have to consult them," a bench headed by CJI said. SC said it would pass orders on Wednesday.

UP govt counsel Harish Salve said let the names be not exclusively from outside the Allahabad HC as the SC is appointing a person and not looking into the HC where he was a judge.

SC says the UP government has to upgrade the SIT by inducting high-level officers as the present officials are mostly of inspector level. UP government says it will do the needful by Wednesday.
