Qatar: Qatar's Court of Appeal has commuted the death sentence awarded to eight Indian nationals, all former Navy personnel, in the Dahra Global case, the MEA said on Thursday.
"We have noted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced," says Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.
According to the MEA, a detailed judgment on the reduced sentences is awaited. The ministry reiterates its commitment to ongoing engagement with Qatari authorities on this matter.
The eight former Indian Navy personnel, who had been employed by a company in Doha, were handed the death penalty by a local court in Doha on October 26.
The former Indian Navy officers Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh were reportedly arrested by Qatar intelligence agency from Doha on August 30, 2022.
