Supreme Court dismisses plea to raise minimum marriage age of women.

Uniform age of marriage

"We are here to do a constitutional duty and not to please you or anyone", Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told PIL petitioner Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, while dismissing a petition filed by him seeking uniform age of marriage for men and women.

Men in India are permitted to get married at the age of 21 years while the marriageable age for women is 18 years. However, Upadhyay had sought equality in the legal age of marriage for men and women.

The petitioner Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay sought that womens age of marriage should be increased to 21 to be at par with men.
