Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has decided to suspend its strike against the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court. However, the lawyers have resolved to boycott his oath-taking ceremony. The strike will remain suspended until a three-member inquiry committee submits its report on the controversy surrounding Justice Varma, whose official residence in Delhi was found with burnt wads of cash after a fire incident.
Key decisions taken during the Association’s meeting include:
1. Suspension of the strike – The boycott of judicial work will be lifted until the inquiry report is received. Judicial proceedings will resume from April 1, 2025, and further steps will be decided based on the report’s findings.
2. Photo Identification Center – A resolution was passed to establish a Photo Identification Center for litigants and advocates to facilitate smoother judicial processes.
3. National Press Conference – A national-level press conference will be held in Prayagraj on April 26-27, 2025, to mobilize support from Bar Associations across the country.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has refused to entertain a writ petition seeking an FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma regarding the alleged recovery of illicit cash. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has directed the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma while the in-house inquiry is ongoing.
Justice Varma, originally from the Allahabad High Court, was transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021 before his recent return.
