BCI Requests CJI to Consider Elevation of Judges from HCs, unrepresented in SC [Read Letter]

NEW DELHI: The Bar Council of India on Monday asked Chief Justice of India U U Lalit to consider elevation of judges from States and High Courts which remained unrepresented in the Supreme Court.

"Some bigger States having vast population of the country are unrepresented in the Supreme Court for the last several months," BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said in a letter to the CJI.

He said the issue was broached up and discussed in a meeting with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju who appeared to be very positive and practical on the subject.

As on Monday, of sanctioned post of 34 judges, there are four vacancies in the Supreme Court. Two judges Justices Indira Banerjee and Hemant Gupta are to superannuate on September 23 and on October 16 respectively.

Current CJI Justice Lalit who heads of Collegium of five senior most judges in the Supreme Court would retire on November 8.
