CJI Gogoi Recommends Justice S. A. Bobde As Next Chief Justice Of India

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi today (October 18, 2019) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice recommending Justice S.A. Bobde, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, will demit the office on November 17, 2019.

Going by the tradition of recommending the name of the next senior judge, CJI Gogoi recommended Justice Bobdes name who will have a tenure of about 18 months.

Justice Bobde enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978 after obtaining his LLB degree from Nagpur University. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1998 and was subsequently elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in March, 2000. In April, 2013, he was elevated as a Judge of Supreme Court. He will retire on April 23, 2021.

As per the process, after receiving the CJIs recommendation, the law minister will now put it before the Prime Minister who advises the President on the matter.
