Delhi Court Restores Two Weekly E-Mulakats For Umar Khalid In Delhi Riots Case

New Delhi: A Delhi court has allowed accused Umar Khalid two e-mulakats a week to speak with his mother and family members, restoring a facility that had been curtailed to a single weekly video call since May 2026.

Court Restores Two Weekly E-Mulakats

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Shahdara District, Karkardooma Courts, allowed an application filed by Umar Khalid seeking two e-mulakats a week for the purpose of talking to his mother and other family members. The Court noted that Khalid had been using two e-mulakats a week for the last six years since his incarceration, without violating any rule under the Delhi Prisons Rules, and accordingly restored the facility to two e-mulakats per week.

Counsel Argues Curtailment Followed No Rule Violation

Counsel for Khalid submitted that for six years since he came into jail, he had been allowed two e-mulakats a week, but that this was suddenly curtailed to one e-mulakat since May 2026, despite the applicant not having violated any rule that would justify such curtailment.

Representing Central Jail No. 1, Tihar, Assistant Superintendent Sh. Brij Mohan Meena submitted that as per rules, an inmate is entitled to only one e-mulakat, and that Khalid's two e-mulakats had accordingly been curtailed to one.

Court Directs Compliance By Jail Superintendent

Accepting the applicant's submission that no rule had been violated during the six years he had availed two weekly e-mulakats, the Court allowed the application and directed that a copy of the order be sent to the Superintendent of the concerned Central Jail.
