Delhi High Court IPL matches

A plea was filed in the Delhi HC to halt all matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that is being conducted during the second wave of the deadly COVID pandemic. The plea seeks a through enquiry as to why IPL is being prioritized over public health.

According to the petitioner, Karan S Thukral and Inder Mohan Singh, it is completely unreasonable and unjustified of the Union Government, Board of Control for Cricket in India, IPL Governing Council, Deli Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to conduct the IPL matches in the city.

“In the national capital, where people are struggling for their lives and the basic necessities of healthcare, along with beds and even cremation grounds for the last rituals, not to mention the acute shortage of oxygen cylinders for critical patients, the conduct of IPL matches in Delhi would disrupt the peace of those who are struggling to save their loved ones,” the petition stated.

As per the petitioner, the cricket stadium, i.e. Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium should instead be used to help the patients, and should be used as a COVID ward or care center, in order to help the common people through these tough times instead.
