Gauhati High Court revives suo moto petition seeking details about children lodged in Jails in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases

The Gauhati High Court had vide order dated July 23rd, 2020 registered the suo moto petition in view of the number of cases of COVID-19 patients detected inside the jails of Assam. 

Reviving its suo moto petition in the wake of the second wave of Covid crisis, the division bench comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Rajan Pathak, who had sought the State Government’s response on the number of inmates inside Assam Jails infected with the Covid-19, has also sought details from Jail Authority about the number of children lodged inside jails in Assam.

Reviving the suo moto petition on April 29th, 2021 the division bench directed the State Government to file new data on record in view of the second COVID wave and covid positive cases reported inside the jails.

The same bench on May 6th, 2021, additionally asked the Assam Government to vaccinate the caretakers of Juvenile Centres with a view of their safety, while treating them as frontline workers.

The court put up the matter for further hearing on May 11th, 2021.
