Heavy Rain in Mumbai leads to Suspension of Court Proceeding

On Wednesday (September 23, 2020), the Bombay High Court suspended all hearings for the day after heavy rain and waterlogging led to an acute shortage of court staff. 

It was reported that on the day 240mm rain was received by Mumbai which led to waterlogging in different areas because of which the court staff was unable to mark their presence in the court which led to the improper and inconvenient working of the court which ends up by suspension the court proceedings. 

The Suspension of proceeding also led to non-trial in two major matters that are of Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty bail plea which were to be heard on Wednesday through videoconferencing. And the other one was Kangana Ranaut’s plea against the BMC over the demolition of a part of her bungalow.  

A notice for which was signed by protonotary and senior master high court, M.W. Chandwani, and Registrar High Court, V.R. Kachare, read, “Due to the acute shortage of staff because of heavy rain on Wednesday, the Benches are unable to take up the matters on their respective boards. Judicial proceedings for the day, thus, stand suspended. Those matters on the board on Wednesday will be taken up on Thursday. A notice regarding taking up boards for Thursday will be published shortly.”

It was further on the website it was issued that in the extension of the suspension notice, the High Court of Judicature won’t hear any matter on Thursday also. And all matters will be heard on Friday and Saturday. 

In an extension of notice, it was mentioned that Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta, Justice A. A. Sayed, K. K. Tated, and R.D. Dhanuka will hear their matters listed on September 24, 2020, and on September 26, 2020. 

The Division Benches of Justice P.B. Varale, S.J. Kathawalla, Ujjal Bhuyan, Nitin Jamdar, and S.S. Jhadhav will take up the matters on September 25 instead of September 24, 2020.
