Krishna Janambhoomi Case: ASI Examination sought of Agra Jama Masjid for Idols of Lord Krishna

Krishna Janambhoomi Case: ASI Examination sought of Agra Jama Masjid for Idols of Lord Krishna

The intervention of the Mathura court was requested vide application seeking a ground radiology test by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at the Jahanara mosque at Agra (widely known as Jama Masjid Agra) to ascertain if the idols of Lord Krishna are buried beneath it.

It was submitted in the application that, based on an assertion that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, after demolishing the Mathura Janamsthana Temple, had taken the Lord Krishna idols, to bury them deep under the Jahanara Mosque in Agra.

The application is preferred in civil suit on behalf of the deity Bhagwan Shrikrishna Virajmaan seeking to deliver the possession of the place in which Shahi Idgah at Mathura is located to the Sri Krishna Janambhoomi trust.

It is contested that the entire issue in the suit revolves around the ostensible usurpation of Aurangzeb, into the Sri Krishna Janambhoomi and for a proper adjudication, the examination of Jahanara mosque, for the idols is necessary. After giving the reference of the order passed by a Varanasi court during the previous week, allowing the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi mosque to ascertain if it was built over the demolished Kashi temple, the applicant submitted that according to many historians, the Eidgah is existing in the place of the prison cell where Lord Krishna was born.

A notice had been issued in the present suit on February 19th 2021, by the Court of Civil Judge Senior Division, Mathura. The application seeking ASI survey, filed on April 14th 2021, is expected to be considered on May 10th 2021.

The first defendant in this case is UP Sunni Central Waqf Board, which is managing the Shahi Eidgah.

After previously dismissing a similar case, the court, in September 2020 observed that "If each and every devotee is allowed to institute such suits, it would jeopardize the Judicial and Social System".

Appeal is pending in the District Court against the dismissal of that suit.
